Show Notes

Hello and welcome to a special episode of Sustain. This is the Impactful Open Source series, part of a former podcast host by Richard Littauer. This is the podcast where we talk about starting with source code and ending with societal change and how do you go from your first line of code into making a difference at universities in cities and governments at scale. On today’s episode, we have two guests, Stephanie Lieggi and Carlos Maltzahn, who work at UC Santa Cruz, in a really awesome center called CROSS (Center for Research and Open Source Software). We learn all about CROSS, a typical life cycle for a student, and how CEPH is involved. We will also find out how commons applies to research projects for students and how that applies to the open source work they are doing at CROSS. Download this episode now to find out more!

[00:01:35] Carlos tells us what CROSS is and since this is a new model Richard wonders if anyone else is doing this.

[00:03:32] Carlos explains what a typical life cycle looks like for a student and how they go through CROSS.

[00:06:57] We learn how CEPH is involved with CROSS and how that started.

[00:10:57] Richard wonders if there are any students who have gone through the incubator and gone on to successfully get money for their projects so far and how many people have graduated.

[00:15:50] Carlos explains to us how CROSS is actually a research center above departments, directly under the School of Engineering. Stephanie talks about the OSPO concept.

[00:20:51] Carlos talks about one of the centers of excellence in their university which is storage systems.

[00:22:16] A point is brought up by Carlos how there are examples in many communities, where that tension between competition and collaboration is really beautiful. Management of the commons is brought up and Richard mentions Elinor Ostrom writing some amazing stuff on that.

[00:24:55] Richard is interested in hearing from Carlos about what he thinks about the commons as applies to research projects for students, how universities manage their digital commons, and how that applies to the open source work you are doing there.

[00:28:38] Stephanie talks about one of the things that she has found exciting is how their fellows have gotten into the idea of community building, which really wasn’t on their radar screens when they started.

[00:30:05] Find out where you could learn more about CROSS here.
